Unnao Case Story: Unnao Rape Case is in the news these days. On 20 December 2019, Kuldeep Singh Sengar, the main accused in the 2017 Unnao Rape Case, was convicted for the rape and sentenced to life imprisonment.

The case got nationwide attention on 8th April 2018 when the victim tried to set herself on fire outside the residence of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister, Yogi Adityanath. This incident was followed by widespread protests across the nation asking justice for the victim.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar, a local politician, is the main accused in the case. Here are the full Unnao case details.

On 4th June 2017, the victim had approached Sengar in Unnao for a job where he allegedly raped her.

On the night of 11th June 2017, she was allegedly raped multiple times by a man named Shubham Singh and his driver Awdhesh Tiwari. FIR was registered against them on 20th June 2017.

Over the course of time, she was physically assaulted multiple times. She even wrote an open letter to Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath seeking justice.

The victim’s father was physically assaulted and thrashed by the supporters of Sengar. He was arrested and sent to judicial custody on 5th April 2018. He was badly beaten with injuries all over the body. He later succumbed to his injuries later on 9th April in hospital. It was found that Sengar’s brother Atul Sengar was behind the attacks.

On failing to get justice and alleged police inaction, the victim attempted suicide by immolating herself outside Chief Minister Yogi’s residence on 8th April 2018. This incident made headlines across India followed by nationwide protests and public outrage.

The matter came into the hands of Central Bureau of Investigation(CBI) who took Sengar for questioning on 13th April 2018. A new FIR was registered and he was sent to Judicial Custody as per orders by Allahabad High Court. The following day i.e. on 14th April 2018 Shashi Singh, the women who took the victim to Sengar, was arrested.

On 21st November 2018, the victim’s uncle was arrested on an 18-year old gun-firing case and later on convicted for the same on 2nd July 2019 and sentenced 10 years’ imprisonment.

On 28th July 2019, the car in which the victim, her lawyer and her two aunts were travelling collided with a truck. The victim and her lawyer were critically injured while the two aunts died on the spot. This incident again sparked protests in the country. The accident took place after the victim was returning from Rai Bareilly jail after meeting her uncle who is lodged in the jail. It was suspected that the accident was a conspiracy on the part of the accused to eliminate the victim and the witnesses in the case.

The Supreme Court intervened into the matter and ordered the State government to pay rupees 25 lakhs as compensation to the victim.

Kuldeep Singh Sengar was convicted for the rape on 16th December 2019 and sentenced to life imprisonment on 20th December 2019.
